I really enjoyed Monsters in Our Midst. Karen Lewis has a fluent, easy writing style which draws the reader in. Her characters are well-drawn and believable. I was particularly taken with Scott's Aunt Violet. You get the feeling throughout that somebody knows something and isn't telling, but you can't work out who. Is it the neighbor who was away at the time, but seems a bit shifty? Or the truck driver who taught part-time at the boy's school and may have been seen in his company on the fatal day? Or even the boy's own mother, who seems far too unemotional about the whole thing and can only deal with the situation by insisting that her son is still alive?

I liked the first half of this book. The situation intrigued me and there were quite a few good suspects. Unfortunately about half way through, it seemed a second author stepped in with a deadline to meet. We started jumping a year forward in time, re-hashing the situation and suspects we just read about, then another two year leap. Several unlikely situations were introduced and dealt with in a short paragraph and contributed nothing to the story line. For example one of the suspects who was interviewed a couple times contacts for help getting her son off drugs, and in the next sentence the son stopped doing drugs and we move on.There are a lot of good suspects, but the person whom I initially thought would be the culprit was indeed and everything else brushed off as error or memory mistakes. This made the ending very predictable and left me feeling like the time was just wasted with getting to know the other suspects.

I have enjoyed other books by Karen Lewis and I enjoyed this one. The plot kept me guessing to the surprise ending - I kept going back and forth the whole book as far as "who dunnit" but did not guess what had actually happened before the end. Well worth reading!
Excellent book! If you like reading like I do,you appreciate a great book like this,that keeps your attention, while your mind is racing trying to figure out what is going to happen next! Easy read that you will find yourself stealing time away,so that you can read a few more pages. By all means, treat yourself to this marvelous book! Well done author, Karen Lewis!
There were lots of twists and turns in this cold case investigation. Every time I thought I had it solved, a new
piece of evidence came to light. I enjoyed the book, an easy read but enough excitement to keep you turning
pages.
I give this book 5 stars because, it keeps you wanting to read it. You won't even realize how much time has passed as you read.
I like the way it keeps you wondering and throws a "monkey wrench " in your ideas.
The only thing I can think of that I didn't like was that it ended; I would've kept on reading it for much longer.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes a mystery that keeps you wondering until the ending.
I read about two thirds of the book before I just couldn't take it anymore and jumped to the last chapter. The plot doesn't carry even those humble hundred pages the author generated. If that's a thriller I'm Queen Elizabeth. It's about as boring as reading the phone book.
First and foremost, it's estimated 95% dialogue in the style of Barbara Wood under drugs. In other words, endless silly, redundant ramblings, the two journalists asking each other stupid questions.
Only one character that was described enough to create an image in the reader's mind's eye, namely Violet. All the others were dummies, lifeless templates, characterized exclusively by dialogue and drinks. Yes, believe it or not. Highly important information like, "He sat his can of Coke on the edge of Slater's desk." "He handed a can of cola to Ben." "He finished his drink in one long gulp." "He took a sip of coffee." "She stirred her coffee." Etc. etc.
Another example of not telling a story but only boring the reader "A trio of street musicians entertained." This is so dry and vapid! It's just not enough to create those inner images ... wouldn't it be nice to at least get to know what they played? Jazz? A march by Sousa? Did they sound like pros or so horrible you wish you were deaf? A few more describing words would do the trick.
The absolute crowning glory is the final It turns out that it was just an accident. How pathetic.
However, the worst of the entire book (yes, it can actually get worse!) are the commas. They are missing where they should be and appear where they don't belong. Oh my. If an author can't write, how about the editor? And please don't tell me that Canada has completely different punctuation rules -- it doesn't.
And this is an International Bestseller? LOLOL.
This was a quick read.
Scott Preston, a reporter for the Morning Herald, is asked to follow up on a 15 year-old cold case of a missing boy, Martin Perry. Martin disappeared on his way home from school and was never seen again. He was assumed dead, although no body was ever recovered.
As Scott begins his investigation, he discovers that Julia Perry, Martin's Mother, still believes he is alive. Everett Perry kind of goes along because he loves his wife.
There are several characters introduced in this short story, making the reader give thought to "whodunit" . It is a fairly quick read, with a surprise ending.
If you like fast moving mysteries, give this one a try.
